- Description: Unlimited lounge access became 10 visits a year, because enough people used it exactly as advertised.

There was a stretch of years when an American Express Platinum Card, on its own, got you into a Delta Sky Club as many times as you wanted to fly through one. It was, for a certain kind of frequent flyer, one of the last genuinely unlimited perks left in American travel. Delta has spent 2024 and 2025 systematically ending that sentence.

## The Access That Got Too Popular

Delta Sky Clubs were never designed around the assumption that every eligible Amex Platinum cardholder would actually show up. But enough of them did — often to work, eat, or wait out long layovers rather than to catch a flight in the next hour — that lounges Delta had built for a smaller, more transient crowd became reliably over capacity. Delta's own language for the fix has been consistent: this is about "balancing the popularity of the Clubs with the premium experience," which is a diplomatic way of saying the free good got used enough that it stopped feeling free to the people it was originally for.

## The Rollout, One Restriction at a Time

On January 1, 2024, Amex Platinum cardholders lost automatic Sky Club access when flying on basic economy tickets — the first real crack in the "your card is your ticket in" model. As of February 1, 2025, that model ended for good: Delta SkyMiles Reserve cardholders are capped at 15 visits a year, and Amex Platinum cardholders at 10, tracked per account, resetting annually. Eligible Platinum cardholders can now only use a Club within three hours of their flight's scheduled departure, or during a layover — no more treating the lounge as a general-purpose airport office.

## Fifteen Visits a Year Is Not Unlimited

Fifteen visits sounds generous until you do the math against how frequent fliers actually fly: a handful of trips a month gets you there before summer ends, and every visit after that comes at full walk-up price or not at all. The card still costs the same. The marketing still leans on "lounge access" as a headline benefit. What changed is the asterisk underneath it, and the asterisk is doing a lot more work than it used to.

## A Popularity Problem Is Still a Problem

Nobody did anything wrong here, exactly — cardholders used a benefit exactly as advertised, often enough that the benefit became unsustainable at the scale it was originally offered. That's a slightly different flavor of this site's usual story: not fraud, not abuse, just enough ordinary people taking a good deal seriously enough that the deal had to shrink to survive its own popularity. The lounge is still there. The unlimited part isn't.
